Planting In The Spring
As we near the end of March we are finally at the start of the spring season. This is one of my favorite times of the year to go on walks, I love the warmth of spring with the crisp fresh air. It just feels so refreshing this time of year. Spring also means I can start planting seeds ready for the year ahead. The main things I get excited about planting the most are fruit and veg. It’s so rewarding at the end of the year when you get to cook a meal with fresh food from your own garden.
Fruit and Vegetables
Early spring is perfect if you’re growing vegetables, especially from seeds!! According to Topmarks UK, spring is when plants start their growth for the season due to the showery weather giving them the moisture they need and, the longer days mean they have more time in the sun giving the air and soil extra warmth.
I keep my seedlings in the glasshouse but, if you don’t have one then you can grow them in little trays on your windowsill. Before we had a glasshouse, I would put my trays in the window where had the most sunlight throughout the day and cover the top with cling film to keep the warmth in, mimicking a greenhouse effect. Just don’t forget to water them!!

So what have I got growing so far this spring??
- Cucumber
- Onions
- Strawberries
- Runner Beans
- Sweet Peppers
- Potatoes
- Tomatoes
I’ll be planting more soon and I’d love to add some fruit trees!!
I always make sure I plant things that I know will get eaten in our house. More is better, if we have too much I freeze them or give them out to family/neighbors. One thing I love about the street we live on is, it’s very small and most of us grow in our gardens which means in the summer, there’s always swapping of crops and harvests!! Last year I ended up with over 100 strawberry plants, in fact, there were probably around 300, I just gave up counting and in the end, was giving them away to anyone who would take them!!
Tips For Keeping Plants Healthy
I’ve had plenty of practice and, even now I still make mistakes. Last year I tried growing corn and it did not go well!! You will always be learning when it comes to gardening so below I’ve shared some tips I’ve learned over the years that now work for me.
Remember, I’m not an expert!!

Don’t water plants in the middle of the day
I know it’s silly as we think of being hot and dry so we get a drink. But if we water plants in the middle of the day the water will be evaporated by the heat from the sunlight. The water can also make the leaves wet if it runs onto them which means the sun is more likely to burn the plant. Try to water them either early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cooler.
Keep your plants safe from slugs and snails
Slugs and snails absolutely love a healthy growing garden. I learned that the hard way last year when the snails moved into my cabbage patch!! Now, you can put slug repellant down, etc, or for a more natural way, you can use eggshells. We go through a fair amount of eggs in our house, so I tend to keep the shells and break them up to sprinkle around my plants and veg. Snails and slugs don’t like a gritty surface so broken shells are perfect!!
Don’t pack the soil/compost tight around your plants
Plants have lots of roots and, those roots need somewhere to go. If they have soil/compost packed in tight they’ll struggle to move. I tend to keep my soil/compost quite loose all year round by turning it. When I plant anything, I fill the hole around the plant then when I’m happy with the covered amount I gently pat it in. This way, the roots can move and grown freely and, water can easily run through to the bottom without the top becoming water-logged.
Sun but not too much sun
Plants love the sun, that’s why we don’t start planting until the spring. But too much sun is also damaging to them. Try to place your beds/pots in areas that get plenty of sun but also have some shade spots throughout the day.
Do you grown your own fruit and veg?? I’d love to know if you do, let me know in the comments!! I hope you enjoyed this post, it’s a different genre for me but I’ve really enjoyed it. Let me know if you’d like more content like this.

I’m so looking forward to the warmer weather here! I grow cucumbers & tomatoes in the greenhouse (there’s also a grape tree too) & outside there’s strawberries, blueberries & red & black currants. I’ve also been trying to grow rhubarb.
I’m trying cucumbers for the first time this year. I would absolutely love a grape tree!! Gav came home this week with a blueberry bush for me too.
This sounds like a great assortment! Good luck!
I’m definitely looking forward to the warmer weather and going on some nature walks. I’ve not had a vegetable garden in a few years, but I used tonloce growing my own fruit and veg in the garden. We also had a few herbs as well – which are still standing, along with rhubarb, and garlic.
The warmer weather just put me in such a good mood!! I tried growing garlic but I’m not sure what happened because I ended up with just leaves growing with no garlic lol.
Thanks!!! Every year I try and add to my garden!!
You’re growing so many yummy things!! I’d especially love to have potatoes and strawberries in a garden. This is such a helpful post, too! I hope all your spring planting and growing goes well! ??

I’m going to start my planting this evening. I’ve been meaning to get back into it but it’s just finding the time to do so. This has given me the motivation I’ve needed!
Ohhhh we have started a garden patch last year with some veggies, and I am so proud to say that our strawberries survived the winter too! This year we’re planning to keep it on just nice flowers, but also some tomatoes for good measure! x
