Self Care Tips To Feel Less Stressed When Living with Chronic Illness
Living with a chronic illness can naturally lead you to feel more stressed and overwhelmed at times. Whether it’s dealing with feelings of anxiety about upcoming medical appointments, uncertainty about invisible illnesses that are manifesting themselves in seemingly unrelated ways, or even regular everyday micro stresses, stress can impact you both psychologically and physically so it’s important to learn how to handle and combat these feelings of stress or burnout to avoid them taking their toll on your immune system and wellbeing.
At Blomma Beauty we focus on natural and organic beauty and wellbeing and offer a wide range of products from independent British brands that can help you incorporate some simple self-care rituals in to everyday life. So, I’ve put together some useful hints and tips to help you feel calmer, taken care of and ready to handle whatever your chronic illness or life throws at you.
When stressful feelings emerge
Feelings of stress and anxiety can creep up on you unexpectedly and how you anticipate and handle this can help prevent prolonged periods of chronic stress which can impact your immune system, organ function and mental wellbeing.
Breathing exercises are a fantastic way to re-centre yourself, calm an anxious mind and counteract stressful feelings. The breath is naturally healing, detoxifying and works directly with the body, emotions and soul. Sam, a holistic lifestyle coach, from The Wellbody takes us through a simple but effective breathing technique in this video and you can read more about the benefits of breathing techniques here.
Supplementing for stress with adaptogens, plant actives that survive in extreme conditions, can create internal balance and help our bodies cope with physical, mental and toxic stress. Life armour nutrition are a natural supplement brand, using adaptogens at effective active levels in their range which are all made without fillers and bulking ingredients.
Their Super Me capsules are recommended by experts and designed to work with your body to relieve the effects of modern life helping you unwind and enhance your resilience to daily pressures. Made with 100% effective and active vegan ingredients, including KSM66 ashwagandha the Super Me capsules can enhance mood, ease tension and calm an overactive mind. Or, for on the go relief a couple of their Drops of Balance tincture under your tongue are a perfect natural remedy that can be kept in your handbag, on your desk or at home for those times when you need a little bit of balance. They’re alcohol, gluten free and vegan too!
When stress impacts your sleep
Getting a good nights sleep can make all the difference when you’re feeling stressed. It’s your body’s chance to recuperate and switch off. If you have trouble drifting off, creating a bedtime routine that is easy to implement and you stick to helps you prepare for sleep long before your head hits the pillow.
Pillow and room sprays are really easy to incorporate into a sleep preparation regime. Palm of Feronia’s crystal charged Sleep Spray is a blend of naturally sedative lavender, thyme oil, historically believed to ward off nightmares and petitgrain, clary sage and bergamot to relax your body and mind. The crystal blend that’s inside the bottle is handpicked to help induce sleep. There’s soothing amethyst and calming Blue Lace agate and moonstone. Just spritz around your room and on your pillow a short time before you head to bed and let the soothing fragrances calm and relax you.
If you have a little more time to prepare for sleep, running a restorative bath can help you switch off from the stresses of the day. I like to light Bumi Naturals’ Calm Candle which has a fresh lavender scent and sprinkle a few handfuls of Magic Organic Apothecary’s Dreamy Mineral Soak in to the bath. It’s a blend of Himalayan salts to restore and purify your skin and calming lavender and antiseptic lemon so you’ll leave the tub feeling relived of stress and with brighter, hydrated and blemish free skin.
When you need some self care
Every now and again, it’s important to take some time to yourself to completely disconnect and focus on feeling happy and content. Whether it’s going for a walk in nature, doing some reflective journaling or pampering yourself with a skincare ritual at the end of a long day.
Finding even 10 minutes to yourself in the bathroom doing a skincare ritual can do wonders for your wellbeing, especially using natural, botanical ingredients. There’s a whole host of essential oils that can help boost mood, butters and balms to soothe and calm the skin and plant oils to deeply nourish and protect, leading you to feel happier, restored and more confident.
One of our most popular rituals is Bumi Naturals’ Self Care Bundle which contains everything you need for a pamper session. All of the products are made with organic plant-based ingredients that will be kind and gentle on your skin. Start with some deep cleansing exfoliation with the Juniperberry and Sage Facial Polish which you can tailor to your skin’s needs. Then enjoy a hydrating and protective Honey and Cinnamon Mask which smells good enough to eat before finishing with a rich and luxurious Night Repair Cream that melts into an oil which you can massage into your skin. For a step by step guide to the ritual, below is a video featuring Bumi Naturals’ founder Imogen
These are just a few simple solutions to help you beat stress and live a calmer, healthier life managing your chronic illness. The most important thing is to find what works for you and helps you to feel calmer, happier and more content.
Wow what some amazing tips here Karen!! I for one will be checking out those products and treating myself seen as my birthday has just passed and Karen has kindly given us this discount code for 15% off the site – MSJ15. I personally think that if there is a way to help myself naturally then that is always better than adding extra meds to my routine. What do you think?? Do you use natural remedies for your self care when it comes to stress?? Let me know in the comments!!
